Mom accuses day care of making mistake that could've cost son his life

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A local mother is accusing her son’s day care of making a huge mistake that she said could have cost him his life.

Earlier this month, Channel 2's Michael Seiden reported how good Samaritans came to the rescue after they spotted two children walking in the middle of the street.

A stranger found the children and put one of them in his truck while the other ran back to the day care. The stranger then called police.

Now there's an investigation into In the Beginning Development Center on Canton Road  that could last up to 30 days.

During that time, officials are expected to review the footage recorded on the day care's surveillance camera.

In the meantime, Seiden spoke with a mom who said there are no excuses for what happened to her son. She believes that staff members should be fired.

“The first thing that came to my mind was, ‘I hope the kid wasn’t my son,' and the reason being is because he’s gotten out before.” Deshah Fields said. “The reason he got out before: There was no lock on the door.”

Fields is demanding answers from the staff at the day care. Witnesses said her 3-year old son, William, and another child slipped through an unlocked fence before running onto a busy four-lane road.

“He was in the street and he was playing. He thought it was a game. He was just running,” Fields said.

The children were rescued, but it wasn't until the following day that the mother of seven said she learned about the incident.

"They just acted like it was a normal day,"  Fields said. She said what hurts the most is that up until this incident, she worked for the day care and considered the owner a close friend. 

"That upset me because you as a mother and you as a friend should’ve came to me (first),” Fields said.

Although the state has launched an investigation, it appears to be business as usual.

Seiden has emailed and called the owner. He even stopped by the day care to speak with her in person.

"You’re the owner so I was wondering if you had any reaction to the state investigation?" Seiden asked.

"Let them do their job," the owner said.

The state told Seiden that the day care remains in good standing, but that could all change after the investigation.

The child's mother said she has forgiven the owner.
