Busy Cobb County road getting major makeover, nearby business to close

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Big improvements are coming to one of the area's busiest roads.

The changes are expected to save drivers precious time in traffic.

The stretch between South Cobb and Atlanta Road in Cobb County will be lowered and have express lanes with tunnels.

Then, at street level, there will be a frontage road, bike lanes, walking paths and parks.

That means a lot of the businesses in the area must go.

We found crews back at work along Windy Hill Road in Cobb County knocking down business after business.

Daycare owner Carolyn Jones says her daycare may be next.

“I anticipate that it’s four months until they tell me that I’ve got to go,” Jones said.

She opened her preschool nine years ago, but it now sits in the path of the project.

A massive makeover of Windy Hill Road through the city of Smyrna.

“My reaction initially is that I just didn’t believe it,” Jones said.

The new Windy Hill Road is expected to be a game-changer for the area, creating a boulevard with better traffic flow, new bike lanes and pedestrian paths.

A spokesperson says the city has already purchased multiple buildings for the project, but some are still in late negotiations.

With the plans unveiled in early 2016, business owners had three years to find new homes.

Jones is still looking for a place nearby for her daycare.

“My concern is making sure that if I’m not able to find something that I’m able to make sure that my parents are able to find suitable childcare for their kids,” Jones said.

We checked with another business owner and he was happy with the deal reached to buy his liquor store.

Jones is just leasing her space and not sure if the owner has sold it yet.

Expect by this summer, all the buildings there along Windy Hill Road to look like a construction site.
