Gunman surrenders after SWAT standoff at gas station

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A gunman surrendered without incident after barricading himself inside a Texaco in Cobb County on Saturday night.

Cobb County police said the man holed up inside the gas station on Riverside Parkway in Austell for several hours after waving a gun around inside the store.

Police identified the man as 26-year-old Marcus Golphin.

Channel 2's Rikki Klaus was at the scene, where SWAT teams surrounded the gas station and rerouted traffic as negotiators worked to get him to surrender.

Golphin surrendered with his hands in the air around 6 p.m.

Police said several people were inside when he went in this afternoon, but he didn't hold them hostage.

The clerks ducked behind safety glass when they saw the gun. The standoff lasted for hours.

Neighbor Gabriel Prats left an interview at Six Flags nearby and saw the action. He watched two adults and a child leave the store.

"I think they already released the clerk and his family out of the store, but they're still there waiting on him to come out," Prats said.

The scene blocked Ricardo James from getting home.

"(It's) very, very frustrating, especially with two babies," James said. "It's kind of scary. I go to that gas station every now and then. You just never know. I could have been in there when he did that."

An officer told Klaus the gunman had been in the store all day playing a gaming machine. Just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday night, we heard a negotiator on a P.A. system address the suspect as Marcus.

Klaus captured video of the moment Golphin came to the door wth his hands up, finally giving up. Police said no one was injured.

"Let's just thank God nobody got hurt, and him, too," James said. "That's all that matters."

Golphin faces charges of false imprisonment, obstruction and possession of a gun during a crime.
