Police said the accident happened around 1 a.m. on State Route 128 on Jan. 1. Officers found 40-year-old Michael Newberry dead in the middle of the road. The driver had already left the scene.
Channel 2′s Tom Jones spoke with Newberry’s parents, Dianna and David, who said their son wasn’t expected to live past the age of five because of medical issues. He survived and got better but was developmentally delayed. That only fueled his desire to be his own man.

“He wanted to be independent so bad,” David Newberry said.
“There’s a part of us missing,” Dianna Newberry said. “It’s been hard for me to sleep. Every time I close my eyes I see somebody hitting my baby with a car.”
On Tuesday, police released a surveillance photo of the vehicle that is believed to have been involved in the crash. Police described it as a gray Crown Victoria or Mercury Grand Marquis. Police said the car’s hood may be dented.
