VIDEO: Man tries to stop carjacking outside gas station before getting shot

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Morrow police are searching for an armed and dangerous man they say is responsible for an attempted carjacking outside of a Clayton County gas station.

The attempted carjacking happened April 6 at the Chevron gas station on Mount Zion Road.

Channel 2 Action News has obtained surveillance video of the violent crime. When the victim, who is a frequent customer of the Chevron, realized what was happening, he ran outside and tried to stop the suspect.

That's when the gunman shot the victim and fired shots into the store, shattering glass before taking off in a green Toyota Highlander.

The store clerk fired back at the suspect as he left.

The victim was ultimately OK and drove himself to the hospital.

Police are now searching for the gunman and two girls who were seen hopping out of the suspect's SUV.

Chevron customer Jacob Cockfield was shocked that something so violent happened there.

"I feel like he’s very lucky to be alive right now," Cockfield said. "It could have been me in that situation."

There's a $2,000 Crime Stoppers reward for information leading to an arrest.

Police believe the gunman also stole a car at a nearby Shell gas station two days before the shooting.
