Crime in Clayton County down for the second year in a row

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Police in Clayton County have tallied up the numbers and say they've seen a significant drop in crime.

Overall numbers show crime has fallen for the second year in a row – down 8.5%.

Murders, burglaries, robberies and thefts are all down.

Roberts says partnerships with other law enforcement and the community has helped.

“Our officers are active. They are active in the community,” Chief Kevin Roberts said.

He says video doorbells are also huge crimefighting tools. Officer Michael LeBlanc says 90% of homeowners have the video doorbells and the technology has significantly reduced crime in the community.

But it’s not all good news. The numbers show rapes increased 45%.

Police did a deep dive into those numbers and Roberts says a large percentage of the rapes are domestic related.

“That research revealed only 3.5% of that increase is stranger on stranger,” Roberts said.

They hope education and assistance programs will help reduce the overall number.
