• Police shooting suspect on the run

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - A man accused of shooting two police officers is on the run after a standoff with the SWAT team on Saturday.

Officers swarmed a Clayton County apartment complex searching for the suspect that is considered armed and dangerous, but he was not there.

Kendarrious Chester is accused of shooting the College Park police officers inside a restaurant. A shootout then continued outside.

    Bullets hit other buildings nearby.

The officers are expected to make full recoveries, but the search for Chester continues to intensify.

“It was hectic for a while, then they came and taped us in,” witness Tina White told Channel 2’s Matt Johnson.

Around 2 p.m. Saturday police said Chester shot the officers inside the Red Snapper restaurant on Old National Highway.

Police said the officers were checking out a domestic situation when Chester shot one officer in his bulletproof vest and then shot at another officer, hitting his police radio.

“I just started praying actually, I did, praying for everybody involved, including the shooter,” White said.

The shooter ran from the scene as helicopters searched from above.

About three hours later, authorities deployed an armored vehicle and SWAT officers to an apartment complex about 3 ½ miles away.

“Are you worried he might hurt somebody?” Johnson asked resident Trakelia Fannin.

“I hope he don't because bullets have no names,” Fannin said.

Police believed Chester was inside a unit at the Sterling Cove Apartments off of Riverdale Road.

When police moved in, about two hours later, no one was inside.

“I think he jumped out of the back window though,” one neighbor told Johnson.

The neighbor also told Johnson the alleged crime is no surprise.

“I thought he was just a cool collected dude. ‘What’s up?’ ‘How you doing?’ I didn’t think he was like that for real,” the neighbor said.

Police arrested a person of interest at the shooting scene. Investigators said they’ll use the help of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and other agencies to try and apprehend the main suspect.

There is a $5K reward to find the main suspect.
