Official: Hall deputy forced to shoot armed 'aggressive' man

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — The GBI is investigating an officer-related shooting in south Hall County.

The incident happened around 7 a.m. in the 2000 block of Sailors Avenue in Gainesville, according to Hall County Sheriff's investigators.

Investigators went to the home after reports of an armed man injuring three people. The suspect fled to a home in the 2100 block of Grant Street when deputies arrived. Deputies ordered him to drop his weapon, believed to be a sword or machete, but the man did not comply.

"The deputies attempted to subdue the assailant by using less lethal force. The suspect made an aggressive movement toward deputies and a deputy was forced to fire," said Sgt. Mike Mitchell of the Hall County Sheriff's Office.

The man received non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he was later treated and released into the Hall County Sheriff's Office custody.

The 27-year-old suspect is facing several charges, including aggravated assault on peace officers and felony obstruction. His identity is being withheld pending the investigation.

As customary procedure, the deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the completion of the GBI's investigation.
