12-year-old hit by gunfire recovering after being in coma

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A 12-year-old boy is hospitalized after he was shot over the weekend.

Police say a bullet entered his home in Cobb County on Friday while he was playing on his computer.

Cobb County police said they are investigating whether it was a stray bullet or someone targeted the home.

The victim's mother told Channel 2's Carl Willis she's in disbelief.

"You just never think this could happen to you," said his mother, Shamena Wooten.

Wooten was with her son, Calin, at home when bullets came crashing through the window.

"You don't think of bullets coming through the window, 'You're at home, you're thinking it's something else, but it's a bullet that's coming from maybe a football field away," she said.

Wooten says she didn't know what happened.

The shot was fired from so far away that they couldn't hear it in the house. They could only hear Calin scream in pain.

Now, the straight-A student and football player is recovering after being in a medically-induced coma.

"People are falling apart. Not only am I falling apart, there are a lot of people that he touched that are falling apart," Wooten said. "It's hard for them to believe. They're saying, 'Not him. Not that kid,' but it's him."

"We need that community to step up and help this grieving mom out right now," said Sgt. Wayne Delk with the Cobb County Police Department.

Wooten said it could be someone else's child next if the shooter isn't held accountable.

"I've heard gunshots before over there and I thought they were firecrackers, and my kids had to tell me, 'No, Mom, those are guns,'" she said. "Why? Why are people just shooting guns? For what?"
