Police swarm neighborhood at scene of officer-involved shooting

ATLANTA — Atlanta police fired shots at an armed man Wednesday afternoon, and that man is now on the run.

Authorities said shots were fired by police after the man produced a weapon.

The incident was reported in the area of Northside Circle NW at the Royal Coach Apartments.

Channel 2’s Liz Artz spoke to a woman who said she was followed by the suspect Wednesday to the laundry room and he started throwing money at her 7-year-old son.

The day before, police say he threatened a maintenance worker with a gun.

That's when police arrived and resident Kenya Price said the man pulled a gun on the officers.

“Gunshots were fired.  He shot at the officers, officer shot back at them,” Price said.

From NewsChopper 2 you can see police scour the area looking for the suspect a man they say needs to be off the streets.

Deputy Chief Erika Shields told Artz the suspect is believed to suffer from a mental illness.

“We may be dealing with someone with some level of mental illness erratic behavior, but unfortunately that doesn't make impact of bullet any less powerful," Shields said.

Police advised residents to not approach the suspect and to call 911 immediately.
