Boater disappears on Lake Lanier

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Rescuers are searching for a boater who disappeared on Lake Lanier on Monday night.

Channel 2's Dave Huddleston was at the lake, where the search continued Tuesday morning. He spoke to rescuers with the Department of Natural Resources and the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, who have been searching since about 9:45 p.m. Monday.

Neighbors called authorities after an unattended boat was found driving in circles, DNR officials said. The boater, who has not been identified, is believed to have been alone.

Officials said the 47-year-old man lives on the lake. His family said it's not uncommon for him to go fishing at night.

Divers and K-9 units on the scene are having a hard time in the search because of all of the debris at the bottom of Lake Lanier.

"Tree logs, rocks, that kind of stuff; (It's been difficult) trying to decipher between the tragets they are picking up," said Forsyth County Sheriff Duane Piper.

Piper said he brought a command center down to the site at DNR's request.
