Authorities say Fayette deputy shot, killed man

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. — Fayette County sheriff's officials say one of their deputies shot and killed a man who refused to remove a knife from a teenager's throat.

The incident happened at about 3:30 a.m. at a residence on Buckeye Road in north Fayette County.

When deputies arrived, they "encountered a 22-year-old male suspect holding a 17-year-old victim hostage with a knife to the victim's throat," said Fayette sheriff's spokesman, Detective Brent Rowan.

Rowan said the suspect refused to drop the knife and after ordering the man multiple times to drop the knife, a deputy fired a single shot, which struck and killed him.

Officials have not released the name of the suspect or the name of the deputy who shot him.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case.
