Authorities identify suspect in Paine College shooting

RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities have identified the suspect in Monday's shooting at Paine College in Augusta.

Xavier Deanthony Cooper, 20, is accused of shooting a 21-year-old in the head.  Officials say the victim, JaJuan Baker of Wilmington, N.C., is in critical condition.

Cooper is facing several charges, including aggravated assault. Cooper also faces charges of having a firearm or knife during a crime; and having weapons in a school building, according to jail records.

Monday's shooting marked the second in two days at the school located about 140 miles east of Atlanta.

The gunfire also led to a lengthy lockdown on campus and several other schools in the east Georgia city.

Authorities have said Cooper and Baker were likely involved in a fight before the shooting.

Paine College officials plan to hold a news conference Tuesday at 4 p.m.
