Several cars damaged when plate on road caves during morning rush hour

ATLANTA — You may have seen road plates that are all over metro Atlanta.

One caved in Wednesday morning at the height of rush hour on a busy road.

It happened in Buckhead on Northside Drive just north of Blackland Road, which is a T-intersection in that area.

Several cars were damaged.

A Channel 2 Action News viewer called us Wednesday morning and told us about the traffic trouble.

When Channel 2's Dave Huddleston got to the scene, he saw police cars and tow trucks helping drivers whose vehicles were damaged by the plate and the hole in the road.

One man's car was heavily damaged and so was the car in front of him.

"It's very unfortunate. I think that plate has been there a while, I'm quite surprised it hasn't been taken care of. I feel pretty fortunate there's no injury. The fellow whose car was damaged in the front had no injuries, he had a child in his car," the driver, who did not want to be identified, said.

Huddleston called Atlanta city officials to see if the plate belongs to Public Works or Watershed, how long the plate has been on the road and how long a plate can be on the road.

City rules say plates should be off the road within 10 days.  But it's still on the road, way too long for some commuters.

Turns out the state has a similar ordinance, and plates should not be down more than 15 days, but it's not a hard and fast rule.

It turns out, this section of Northside Drive is the city's responsibility, not Public Works or Watershed, and they plan to do road restoration work Dec. 14.
