Neighbors having trouble getting to their homes after truck crashes into parking deck

ATLANTA — A truck that got stuck driving through a northwest Atlanta Walmart parking garage on Friday is still there, days later.

Neighbors living in the area are forced to find other places to park.

“I came home after working, and I was just like, it was just cars, piled all around here,” Teko Johnson told Channel 2′s Larry Spruill.

Teko Johnson said that’s what he saw, when he arrived to his apartment complex, The Alexander, on Friday night.

Johnson said it was impossible to find a parking spot because the apartment complex closed off sections of the Walmart parking garage in northwest Atlanta on Howell Mill Road.

The closed down garage forced people to park in the front area and Johnson told Spruill he didn’t know why until he heard the news, “My roommate actually said, ‘Oh, it was something that happened in the parking garage and they weren’t letting people in there.’”

The reason for the closure was a large delivery truck got stuck, while driving through the garage. The truck driver told Channel 2 Action News he was following his GPS, which brought him this way.

“How does that even happen, like how do you not know the height of the truck?,” said Johnson.

Friday night crews started securing the parking garage with metal beams, but Monday, we returned back to the scene and the truck was still there, but no crews were on-site.

Martin Cuadra, with Uzun + Case, has over 40 years of experience as a structural engineer. He said there is a process to removing the truck.

“Once you have secured the structure, the next thing and the first thing I would do, is take the air out of the tires. If we have an one inch, there, that maybe enough. You can cut the tires and that maybe enough, but again it depends on how far, how deep wedged it is in it,” Cuadra said.
