Teen girl dies after shooting at boyfriend's home, sources say

ATLANTA — A teen girl is dead and a gunman is on the run following a shooting in southwest Atlanta on Thursday evening.

Atlanta police swarmed a home along Greenleaf Circle after someone called 911 to a report a shooting.

“When they arrived, they found a juvenile teenage female has been shot,” Capt. Reginald Moorman, with the Atlanta Police Department, said.

Detectives said they found the teen sprawled out on the floor of the home’s garage around 5:30 p.m.

“We are trying to work leads and talk to neighbors to see exactly what happened,” Moorman said.

Investigators have released few details about the shooting. Family and friends told Channel 2's Nefertiti Jaquez that they were too upset to talk about the shooting on camera.

Jaquez’s sources told her the 16-year-old victim was critically injured after being shot in the chest while visiting her boyfriend’s home.

“She was here on the scene and transported pretty quickly to the hospital,” Moorman said. 

Doctors worked for almost five hours to save her life but the girl died from her injuries.

Jaquez was there as officers brought in K-9 units to canvass the area.  She watched as detectives walked out of the home with a backpack, which Jaquez’s sources confirmed belonged the victim. 

The girl’s boyfriend was being interviewed at police headquarters Thursday night following the shooting. 

Detectives said they confiscated three guns from the home. They believe there were multiple people in the home at the time of the shooting.
