Man shot to death in Buckhead; police still searching for shooter

ATLANTA — Police are searching for a man who shot another man to death in Buckhead Saturday afternoon.

Police said the victim was found dead in an apartment on Peachtree Park Drive with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.

The shooting happened behind a busy section of Peachtree Street near Fresh Market and Benihana.

Channel 2′s Michael Seiden was at the scene, where a family member told him off-camera that the victim, his cousin, was shot in his own apartment.

Police told Seiden the victim was one of several people involved in a fight.

“Our initial indication is that there was some type of altercation that took place inside the apartment complex with several males, which ultimately led to one of the males being shot," Lt. Jeff Baxter, with Atlanta police, said.

Police said the shooter and his victim knew each other, but they do not know the motive yet.

The shooter fled the scene in a Ford sedan with California license plates, police said.

Police are still searching for the shooter and questioned several people at the apartment complex. Investigators hauled away large bags filled with evidence as police try to identify the shooter.

Police said it appears the shooting was isolated and there is no danger to the public.

Charles Merkerson, who lives at the complex, said he’s never felt like the area is dangerous.

“I’ve been here for almost a year now, and it’s been safe. It’s been secure,” Merkerson said. “I looked out the window, the bedroom window, and said, 'Baby, there’s all kind of police out here and an ambulance and a firetruck.”
