Local people renting out homes to hurricane evacuees -- for free

ATLANTA — Channel 2 Action News has found metro Atlantans that are giving up their homes to help out people evacuating from Hurricane Florence.

Many of the evacuees are staying at hotels along the way, but some are finding other places to stay as well.

Kevin Leung showed Channel 2's Justin Wilfon around his midtown Atlanta condo that he said he was renting out to Hurricane Florence evacuees.

“I had a mother-daughter duo reach out to me,” Leung said.

When they arrive at his condo from Charleston, he won’t charge them a dime.

He's doing it through a special program on AirBnb that allows hosts to rent out their homes and apartments to evacuees for free.

“I hear that it’s going to pound Charleston pretty hard, so to know that I’ll be able to help out makes me feel good,” Leung said.

Wilfon found a group of evacuees that found somewhere else to stay in a hotel in DeKalb County. All of them left their homes on the North Carolina coast early Wednesday morning.

“It was hard. This was my first home. I’ve been there 13 years. And I just did one last walkthrough and I prayed through the house, and I left,” evacuee Stephanie Williams said.

“I put a Bible on the front step. Prayed over the house, and the house is going to be fine,” evacuee Taraus Deas said.

With the storm approaching the coast, it’s unclear how long these evacuees will call Georgia home, but they do know they feel lucky to be here.

“I’m blessed. It’s going to be OK. It’s going to be fine,” Williams said.

The American Red Cross told Wilfon Tuesday night that they have not opened any shelters in metro Atlanta, but that’s still a possibility.
