Hundreds attend wake for rapper Shawty Lo

BEVERLY HILLS, CA - JUNE 23: Singer Shawty Lo performs at ASCAP's 21st Annual Rhythm and Soul Music Awards on June 23, 2008 in Beverly Hills, California.

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — A steady stream of fans and friends filled a southwest Atlanta church to remember rapper Shawty Lo. He was killed in a fiery crash on I-285 in south Fulton County last week.

Hundreds of people packed the Mount Carmel Baptist Church to pay their respects to Shawty Lo.

The service started with a prayer. The rapper's family and children were front and center with broken hearts.

While family members could not speak on cameras, Shawty Lo's friends, fans and fellow artists did.

"It's really about taking nothing and turning it into something," rapper/producer Benzino said.

Shawty Lo, whose real name is Carlos Walker, was raised in the Bowen Homes housing projects and put Bankhead on the map.

"He wasn't ashamed of who he was and where he came from. He always showed respect for Bankhead," Manager Johnnie Cabbell said.

Walker's funeral is scheduled for Saturday at noon at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church on Fairburn Road.
