Heads up, drivers: Crane removal will close part of Spring St. next week

ATLANTA — Part of a busy main street in Midtown Atlanta will be closed part of next week.

Two lanes of Spring Street between 18th and 17th streets will be closed for a few days starting Tuesday. Then all lanes of that stretch will be closed through next weekend.

The Georgia Department of Transportation says the closure is necessary to remove a tower crane that was used in the construction of Ascent Midtown at 1400 West Peachtree St.

One resident in the area, Robert Sims, is asking how one of the busiest roads in Atlanta can be shut down.

The plan is that the two left lanes of Spring Street between 18th and 17th will be closed from at 10 a.m. during nonpeak hours until Thursday at 9 p.m. Then all of that stretch will be closed until Monday, July 16, at 3 a.m.

One driver says she is OK with the closure because she says it’s better to be safe in the removal of the crane.

There will be detour signs directing drivers.

A lot of drivers take Spring Street as they come off the Buford Highway connector to get downtown.

You’ll instead be directed to continue past Spring Street and then turn right on Peachtree Street.

To access Spring Street NW from Peachtree Street NW:

Continue south on Peachtree Street NW to 17th Street NW, turn right and continue to Spring Street NW. “Local Traffic Only” may proceed to destinations between Peachtree Street NW and 18th Street NW as normal. Please be aware of two-way traffic beginning at S. Rhodes Center NW and use extreme caution.

To access Spring Street NW from the Buford Highway connector:

To access Spring Street NW from 18th Street NW:

Large trucks and buses will be redirected north on Spring Street NW to S. Rhodes Center NW. Turn right on S. Rhodes Center NW, turn right on Peachtree Street NW, turn right onto 17th Street NW and continue to Spring Street NW.

Cars, lightweight trucks and vans will be directed east onto 18th Street NW to West Peachtree Street NW. Turn left on West Peachtree Street, turn right on Peachtree Street NW, turn right onto 17th Street NW and continue to Spring Street NW.
