1 arrested after standoff following shooting of unmarked police car

ATLANTA — One person was arrested after an hourslong standoff in southwest Atlanta.

Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes spoke to neighbors who said they heard at least 40 gunshots.

Police said the gunshots were coming from a house on Osborne Street.

The gunfire started around 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Investigators said a man with a rifle opened fire on two undercover Atlanta police officers who were sitting in their unmarked car.

Several bullets hit that car, but somehow the officers were able to get away unharmed.

"I heard gun shots at least 40. I heard a lot," a neighbor said.

Police said they never even had a chance to shoot back at the gunman.

They called for backup and that is when the situation became a standoff between police outside and six people inside the house.

Fernandes spoke to a witness who saw the standoff end peacefully.

“We went down there and had maybe seven people, like six of them come out of the house and crawl on the ground,” the witness said.

Police detained a total of six people and arrested one on an outstanding warrant for something unrelated.

Investigators are still trying to determine who was the shooter or if that person got away.

This shooting comes just days after police said a man fired shots at an officer in the same neighborhood.

Police said Ja'Marrius Rucker drove down a busy street Oct. 8 while firing shots at officers.

Officers arrested him after they said he crashed a stolen car along Sylvan Road.

Channel 2 Action News reported on a murder at the same house a year ago.

One person was killed and six others were shot in that case.
