Barbers encouraging voters to head to the polls with free haircuts

ATLANTA — According to the Secretary of State’s office, more than 2 million Georgians have already voted early in the 2022 midterm elections.

State officials expect more big numbers on Election Day.

To encourage people to head to the polls, barbers held an event on Monday called ‘Cut to the Polls’ at both the Upper Cuts Barber Shop in southwest Atlanta and the True Skillz Barber Shop in northeast Atlanta.

Barbers offered free haircuts between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

“I appreciate it because I need a haircut real bad,” said voter, Pierre Rice.

Rice told Channel 2′s Audrey Washington why voting was important to him.

“My ancestors fought for things like this and for me to have that privilege to vote,” said Rice.

While people received a free haircut, they also got information about voting, the candidates and the issues.

“We volunteered our services to motivate and inspire people to go to the polls. I know this is an important election,” said the owner of True Skillz Barber Shop, Thomas Powell.

Monday, organizers on both sides of the political aisle made last minute phone calls, canvassed neighborhoods and reminded voters where to cast their ballots for the midterm elections.

“We have done phone banking, we have sent out postcards, we have done Facebook advertising,” explained Marci McCarthy, chairman of the DeKalb Republican Party.

Organizers told Washington Monday is their final push for votes.

“Gather everyone as a community and bring us together and celebrate what we’re here to do, vote and practice our civil rights,” said Rice.
