Atlanta police identify armed carjacker they say shot at officers 3 times

ATLANTA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is taking over the investigation after a police officer shot a suspected carjacker.

Officers said the suspect jumped out of the car and started shooting.

“It was a close-range gun battle, very dangerous, and he’s lucky to be alive,” said Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Jeff Glazier.

Police identified the suspect as Timothy Hood.

Channel 2's Nefertiti Jaquez obtained a mugshot of Hood from a source. It's from January when Hood was arrested for probation violations, which included: robbery, aggravated assault and battery.

Atlanta Police Department’s top brass said they felt a sense of relief after learning their officer was not injured in the southwest Atlanta shoot-out.

“You can only imagine, your life is on the line and somebody is literally trying to kill you and the officer just did a fantastic job,” Glazier said.

Police say the man carjacked his girlfriend around 11:30 a.m. in northwest Atlanta. An officer in southwest Atlanta spotted the car 30 minutes later and chased it.

When the suspect crashed into another car at the intersection of Milton and Lakewood Avenues, police said he got out and started firing at the officer.

“The officer returned fire and during that gun battle, the officer struck the suspect three times,” Glazier said.

The suspect was hit in the shoulder, arm and leg -- that’s when another officer and others on-scene applied a tourniquet to the suspect’s bleeding leg, which likely saved his life.

“They’re trained to stop the threat, and once the threat was stopped, they realized that they have a person who could die if they don’t act quickly,” Glazier said.

Police said Hood is listed as stable at Grady Memorial Hospital.

The officer involved was not injured

“Every officer is different in terms of knowledge, training and experience that they have, and I think luckily this officer had the knowledge training and experience to handle the situation in the way that he did,” Glazier said.

The driver of the other car suffered minor injuries.

The carjacking victim was not injured.
