ATLANTA — As the 2024 holiday season presses on and the year winds down to a close, Airbnb said they’ll be activating new anti-party technology to reduce the risk of disruption for the New Year’s Eve holiday weekend.
Airbnb said there were 33,000 people who didn’t book accommodations in 2023 after they “activated similar defenses” for New Year’s Eve and 730 were in Atlanta alone.
Across Georgia, the company said 1,800 total were “deterred from booking an entire home” as part of the company’s global party ban.

“While issues are rare, we want to do our part to help reduce the risk of unauthorized and disruptive parties. Airbnb is committed to supporting hosts and the communities they live in, and we hope these defenses allow guests, hosts and neighbors to celebrate the holiday with added reassurance,” Tara Bunch, Global Head of Operations at Airbnb, said in a statement.
Airbnb said they use several types of data points to determine if a reservation is being made for a “disruptive, unauthorized party.”
Those “signals” include how long a trip is, the type of listing being rented, how far the listing is from someone’s location and when the reservation is being made for.
“This New Year’s Eve, Airbnb is introducing measures to help reduce the risk of unauthorized and disruptive parties. This anti-party technology uses machine learning to identify and block potentially higher-risk bookings of entire home listings from being made – with the goal of promoting positive travel and hosting on the platform,” the company said.
