911 calls show frantic moments APD officer injured by speeding driver

ATLANTA — Newly released 911 calls are shedding more light on an interstate crash that injured an Atlanta police officer.

In the calls, witnesses reported an out-of-control driver speeding along Interstate 75 northbound before crashing into an APD police cruiser earlier this month near Exit 243.

Witnesses say the driver was going more than 100 mph.

"The police officer appears to be injured. And the idiot that was driving I'm sure is injured as well," a witness said in the 911 call.

First responders rushed to the scene, but the officer managed to free himself from the wreckage.

Police arrested and charged 18-year-old Dionte Bradley.

The teen told investigators he was changing lanes when he lost control of his Honda Accord.

"Everybody will know exactly who caused the accident because this guy was a fool, and I was already about to call. He was reckless driving," the witness said.

It's unclear when the injured officer will return to duty, but when he does, his brothers and sisters in blue, will be there to welcome him back. He didn't suffer any life-threatening injuries.

"He's healing. He's resting, and we can wait to get him back out on the streets," Officer Anthony Grant said.

Investigators don't suspect alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The teen is facing more than a half dozen traffic charges, including reckless driving.
