3 dead after car crashes into utility pole

ATLANTA — Police are investigating a deadly crash that happened early Sunday morning in southwest Atlanta.

Channel 2's Berndt Peterson said the crash happened on Campbellton Road and Niskey Lake Road around 2 a.m.

Atlanta police said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crashed into a power pole and tree and then burst into flames.

The car was completely engulfed when the first responding officer arrived. Debris was found spread almost 200 feet from the point of impact.

Three people in the car were killed.

“I heard a big bang. It exploded. I got up and looked out the window, and I saw a fire down there,” said a neighbor who didn’t want to be identified.

There were patches of ice on the road, but the neighbor said that was from the water the fire department used to put out the burning car.

Traffic was blocked in the area for hours

Utility crews are on the scene working to repair the pole. Between five and 10 homes were left without power due to the crash.

The car has been towed away.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims.
