• Atlanta woman celebrates 100th birthday

    Updated:

DECATUR, Ga. - It was a special day in Atlanta for a woman who has dedicated her 100 years of her life to helping others.

The spotlight shined tonight on Mary Hughes, known to so many as Mother Hughes, for her special birthday.

Hughes celebrates her birthdays by distributing clothes and shoes to local homeless shelters. She gives a box for every year she has lived, so 12 shelters will divide 100 boxes this year.

Family and friends gathered at the Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church in Decatur.

Hughes thanked God for another birthday.

“The more you give, the more God gives you and if you can help somebody, your living will not be in vain,” Hughes said.
