Atlanta R&B band mourns slain band director

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga.,None — Police are trying to figure out who killed the band director of a legendary Atlanta R&B band.

Clayton County police would only say they received a 911 call, and when they arrived at the home in the Jamestown Square community, they found a man had been shot to death inside his home.

Members of the band The Tams say police told them the victim is Versi Sain. They say Sain has been their band director since the 90s.

The Tams have been in Atlanta forever, according to band member Reginald Preston. Preston says the group performed at Gov. Sonny Perdue's inauguration.

The father of rapper TI's wife, Tiny, performed in the group, members told Channel 2’s Tom Jones.

"He was a great musician, band director. He's gonna be missed. And I just hope we can get to the bottom of this," Preston says of Sain.

One neighbor said a man who lives in the victim's home came to her door and asked to use the phone.

"He said, 'Somebody tried to break in my home,'" Rosemary Goyette says.

Goyette says the man told her he woke to find someone in his home. She says he didn't mention anything about his roommate being deceased. Neighbors say he was taken in for questioning.

As band members gathered outside of their friend's home, they recalled how he was the glue that held the band together.

"He was our band director. He was the leading force behind the music," Preston said.
