APD investigates officer-involved shooting

ATLANTA — A heavy police presence remains in a southwest Atlanta neighborhood following a wild police-involved shooting earlier this afternoon.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Ryan Young said officers were in the area of Old Hapeville Road investigating a robbery at the time of the shooting.

"Just before noon, officers were in the area along with investigators doing a follow-up investigation in regards to a recent reported robbery. During their investigation, the investigators actually came up on an active gunfight between multiple subjects. During that engagement, officers fired their weapons," said Atlanta Police Capt. Paul Guerrucci.

The gunfire had neighbors in the area ducking and running for cover.

[Did you hear the shots?] "Yeah, we heard the shots. [How many did you hear?] "Like five," said one witness.

The suspects then jumped into a car and tore through a yard, narrowly missing a house. However, it still hit the house's patio. The car then went airborne, jumping over a parked police car and slamming into a laundry mat off Cleveland Avenue.

Two suspects were transported to a local hospital with gunshot injuries. One suspect was arrested. It currently remains unclear who shot the two suspects.

Nearby Cleveland Elementary School was placed on lockdown during the incident, Atlanta Public Schools said.
