An effort to change Clayton County roads named after Confederate generals fails

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — An effort to change the names of 14 streets and roadways in Clayton County hit a dead end Tuesday evening.

A resolution to rename streets with names “associated with the Confederate States of America” were not voted on after no one would second a motion to vote on the resolution.

Channel 2′s Candace McCowan spoke with Resolution Sponsor Commissioner Demont Davis on WSB Tonight at 11 p.m. and he said he was a little disturbed by it.

“I was a little surprised and disturbed by it,” said Davis.

Of the five Clayton County Commissioners, Davis was the only commissioner ready to vote on the resolution.

The board Chairman told Channel 2 that there is a clear reason why he didn’t want to vote on the name changes.

“I want to get some additional information as it relates to the cost as to how much we would have to pay to the name changes on each street and any other insularly cost that’s related to this move,” said Chairman, Commissioner Jeffery Turner.

The cost was also a concern of those against the name changes.

“I think that it’s expensive and wondering how that’s going to fit in the budget, and also all of the names associated are history,” said Anita Sterling.

Davis, who sponsored the bill, said this isn’t the end of his efforts.

“I will find out what questions they have and begin to address them accordingly,” said Davis.
