3-year-old boy dies after car backs over him

ATLANTA — Channel 2 Action New has confirmed a 3-year-old boy died after being struck by a vehicle in southwest Atlanta.

It happened in a shopping center parking lot of the Atlanta Meat and Fish Market off of Campbellton Road around 6 p.m.

Family members tell Channel 2's Liz Artz that someone backed over 3-year-old Daouda Mangassou as he was riding his bike in the parking lot. Family members said his father owns the business.

"The driver was backing out of a parking space, did not see the child and struck the child," said Officer John Chafee with the Atlanta Police Department.

The child was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, but did not survive, Chafee said.

No charges have been filed against the driver, who remained at the scene, according to police.

Investigators are not releasing the identity of the child.

The accident remains under investigation.
