GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — As the Atlanta Braves get back on the field today in Cobb County, and we look forward to football coming back next month, the first live professional sporting event in Georgia with fans started in Gwinnett County.
The “All American Team Cup” tennis match began Friday at noon.
The event came together in just the last 30 days, part in thanks to professionals like John Isner, the top ranked American, and world number 20 right now.
The court in Peachtree Corners can probably hold around 2,000+ fans, but its limiting capacity to only about 30-percent, or around 400-to-450 seats.
They’re only selling every other row, so no one is directly in front or behind.
And every group of tickets sold automatically blocks the next three seats around them, to make sure everyone keeps social distancing.
The tournament’s director told Channel 2 Action News they hope other venues and sports can use their playbook to come back with fans and do it safely.
“It’s really important for our sport, important for our state… this is the first sporting event in Georgia with fans. This is the first tennis event in the United States with fans since COVID-19 and we would like to be the case study to show how it can be done,” tournament director Eddie Gonzalez.
Staff and volunteers are also required to wipe down surfaces.
Fans will be given masks and have temperature checked when they enter the gates.
