DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - A 16-year-old girl was found shot to death in her bedroom Monday night, according to DeKalb police.

The girl, identified by police as Jewell Jefferson, was shot inside her home on Great Meadows Road in Lithonia around 7 p.m. Monday.

Police say a 17-year-old who was in the room at the time pulled the trigger.

"There was a gun in the room and the victim ended up getting shot," Shiera Campbell, with the DeKalb County Police Department, said.

Police are not saying what led up to the shooting and are still investigating the possibility that it was accidental. Officers are also not releasing the relationship between the two teens. But police say the 17-year-old's actions after the shooting are concerning.

"Because the suspect did flee the location, that does not bode well for him," Campbell said.
