16-year-old accused in deadly shooting of Newton County teen

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — Police are questioning a teenager after a deadly shooting at a Newton County housing complex.

Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach spoke to neighbors in Covington Saturday morning. One said she first saw two 19-year-old victims and the 16-year-old who police are questioning hanging out by a tree in Nixon Circle. That's where police found the 16-year-old alleged shooter.

Dayneian A. Gibson was shot in the arm, but the other victim, Quintavian Johnson, was already dead and lying by a dumpster when police arrived.

About 11 p.m., the neighbor said she thought the teens were arguing about something and when she went back inside heard about five shots.

Police said there was a confrontation that escalated and ended with the 16-year-old pulling a gun and shooting. Police said the suspect did not run. One witness said the suspect was one of the people who called 911.

When the first officers arrived, police said he was still standing nearby with the gun in his hand.

He immediately dropped the weapon and put his hands in the air to surrender to police. He has been charged with murder.

Crime scene investigators from Covington and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation processed the scene overnight. Detectives have also been talking to witnesses.
