1 injured after MARTA bus overturns in SW Atlanta

ATLANTA — Authorities tell Channel 2 Action News one person was injured Sunday afternoon when a MARTA bus hit a telephone pole and a tree before overturning in southwest Atlanta.

The wreck happened at about 3 p.m. at Kimberly Road just south of Cascade Road.

"That could've been me,"  said Tiwanna Jones, who told Channel 2's Shae Rozzi that she normally rides the bus, sometimes with her children.

Officials said the bus driver, who attributed the accident to a mechanical failure, was taken to a MARTA facility to be checked out. The single passenger on the bus was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

It took heavy-duty semitrailers to pull the bus upright. Atlanta police helped block the road while Fulton County police and MARTA representatives conducted their own investigation.

Bystanders watching the cleanup were more concerned about the passenger and driver on board.

"I pray that everything is OK with them," Jones said.

Route 71 runs mainly along Cascade Road from MARTA’s West End station, officials said.

The accident remains under investigation.
