ATLANTA — Authorities in Dawson County say a hiker is dead and another had to be rescued Friday night.

The Dawson County Fire Chief Danny Thompson held a news conference late Friday saying a boyfriend and girlfriend were hiking at Cochran Falls.

Thompson said crews responded to a call of a man injured around 4:25 p.m. Friday afternoon. About 90 minutes later, they were able to find the man, who said his girlfriend left and tried to get help.

One search group worked to rescue the man while a second group began to search for the woman. Her body was found around 7:15 p.m. Friday night at the bottom of the falls.

“The falls obviously go up into the mountains. The elevation is almost 2,000 feet. And she was located down in the bottom area, the Cochran creek area--what we call the Cochran Creek Falls," Thompson said.

The man was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with back, head and knee pain, according to Thompson. The couple’s names have not been released.

Thompson said the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office has now taken over the investigation.

This is the second rescue in the area this week. Deputies and K-9 units were able to rescue a man who disappeared during a walk on the Hike Inn Trail near Amicalola Lodge on Wednesday.
