Georgia Aquarium will offer visitors chance to swim with sharks

ATLANTA — If you ever wanted an opportunity to swim with sharks but couldn’t make it to a coastal beach, your wish may soon come true.

The Georgia Aquarium announced as part of their 2020 expansion project already under construction, a one-million-gallon shark exhibit that will be interactive. The aquarium will also get a redesigned entrance.

The shark exhibit includes a dive cage which will allow guests to enter the waters of the shark habitat under the guidance of Aquarium dive staff. No diving certification is required for anyone to participate. The Aquarium has already opened up a signup page for anyone interested.

If the cage is too scary, guests can sign up for a chance to wade into an immersion pool housing zebra sharks and stingrays attached to the shark habitat. Staff will be on hand to accompany anyone who wants an up close experience and an opportunity to learn more about the conservation of these animals.

The Aquarium says the primary mission of these exhibits is to educate guests on the importance of these misunderstood creatures and their place in keeping the oceanic ecosystem healthy.

The overall idea is to give visitors a renewed sense of respect of all varieties of animals through the hands-on immersion experiences, gallery features and research information.

There is no word yet on an opening date for the exhibit as the construction is still going on. The Aquarium plans on releasing a name for the experience once the construction is finished.
