Fulton County Schools lay out plans for fall athletics

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Now that school has started virtually, in-person or some combination of the two, Fulton County Schools rolled out their plan to launch band and sports this fall.

According to the district roughly 15% of high school students take part in fall sports or band.

County athletic director Dr. Steven Craft explained his COVID-19 plans for participation at Tuesday nights school board meeting.

Football:

  • Varsity football games will start Sept.17 and Sept.18 with stadiums limited to 30% capacity
  • Only digital tickets will be sold for games
  • Spectators will be required to wear masks and will be screened before entering the stadium
  • Gate workers at stadiums will be screened
  • All fans will be required to social distance inside the stadium
  • Bands will set up in one end of the stadium and will not travel for away games

Volleyball:

  • Some matches began on Monday, Sept. 7, full competition resumes Sept. 14
  • Capacity will be limited to 25% for each gym
  • Only digital tickets will be sold
  • Spectators will be required to wear masks and be screened before entering the gym
  • Fans will be required to social distance while in the gym

Softball and Cross Country:

  • Limited competitions started the week of, Sept. 7, full competitions start the week of Sept. 14
  • Softball will be limited to 150 spectators, tickets will be sold digitally
  • All spectators will be required to wear masks and be screened before entering the stadium
  • Softball parents are encouraged to bring tailgating chairs to social distance
  • Cross country does not sell tickets for matches
  • Cross country spectators will be required to spread out through the course rather than crowding together at the finish line.

In addition, Craft added that football cheerleaders would be socially distanced while on the track surrounding the football fields and would be able to travel with the team for away games.

He also said the county and its schools do plan on having open concession stands, however those stands will serve pre-packaged food only.
