• Dragon*Con Paraders Invade Peachtree St.

Hordes of people dressed as comic book characters, science fiction heroes and and other fantastical figures invaded the streets of downtown Atlanta at the 2010 Dragon*Con parade on Saturday.

The festivities began outside the front doors of Ted's Montana Grill at 10 a.m. Spectators were gathered at the scene to watch appearances from characters including Disney princesses, Star Wars stormtroopers and the Six Flags mascot.

A nursing student dressed as a witch doctor told Channel 2's Pam Martin that he was attending the event for the tenth time for the escapism.

"I'm here to...not be myself, to be somebody else, to blow off some stress and just have a good time," said Chris Moore, of Lawrenceville.

The parade is just one of the events planned for the 24th annual Dragon*Con convention. Other events include a costume contest and an awards banquet, as well as panel discussions on diverse topics.

The convention bills itself as the largest multimedia and pop culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, pop art and more.

The 2010 Dragon*Con will raise money for the Georgia Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America.

The festivities will continue through Monday.
