Downtown Event Could Cause Traffic Delays

ATLANTA — Georgia Department of Transportation officials put the word out Monday morning that drivers should plan for delays during their morning commute because of a huge event taking place downtown.

GDOT electronic signs flashed messages warning of the possible delays all weekend.

Tens of thousands of people were expected to attend the "Get Motivated" event at the Georgia Dome on Monday morning.

Atlanta hosted the same in event in 2007, and some of the commutes were four hours long.

GDOT officials strongly encouraged commuters to plan for additional time, or to shift their day around if possible.

Organizers of the event also strongly encouraged attendees to use MARTA. The Georgia Dome parking garages only hold 5,000 cars – so after a heavy commute, parking could be an issue.
