Downtown Atlanta Building Imploded

ATLANTA,None — The Roosevelt House in downtown Atlanta was imploded Sunday morning to make way for new mixed-use development.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Rebecca Lindstrom was there with spectators just after 7:30 a.m. when the building came crashing down.

Crews used 150 pounds of explosives to bring the building down in about 15 seconds.

The Roosevelt House was one of the first federally-funded public housing projects in the country. The building was brought down to make way for new mixed-use development and to make the area south of Georgia Tech a more positive area for public housing.

"If there could be a way they could blend it in, that would be so much better," said spectator Vickie Baldwin.

Two years ago, 150 senior citizens were moved out of the building to make way for the demolition process.

Crews said the clean-up process would begin immediately.
