Donations for Gilmer County flood victims

Recovery efforts are under way in Gilmer County where torrential rains flooded Clear Creek and Turkey Creek Thursday, damaging at least 50 homes. Local and state emergency management officials continue to assess the damage and coordinate the effort to provide badly needed goods and services to the storm survivors.

Donated goods will be received at the Gilmer County Emergency Operations Center (formerly the Goodwill) at 1123 Progress Road, Elijay, Ga. Please call 706-635-3424 to arrange a delivery.

At this time, the biggest demand is for cleaning supplies such as bleach, mops, brooms, buckets, trash bags (all sizes), baby wipes and disposable gloves (rubber or latex).

There is also a need for building supplies, including: 2 x 4 studs, sheet rock, insulation, hammers, blue plastic tarps, plywood and leather gloves.

Also needed are personal hygiene products, small first aid kits and bottled water.

Donations of used clothing are not needed.
