Deering Road sidewalk closed for bridge repairs

ATLANTA — Drivers are no longer the only ones affected by the closure of Deering Road at Peachtree Street; now pedestrians will not be able to walk along the AMTRAK side of the road.

The road, which normally serves as a cut-through from Northside Drive to Peachtree Road, has been closed since January due to construction. The Georgia Department of Transportation has been working to repair the bridge over Interstate 75.

Recently, crews discovered that the Deering Road sidewalk is connected to the bridge and is therefore not safe for walkers and runners.

Channel 2's Linda Stouffer spoke with GDOT Deputy Press Secretary Jill Goldberg, who said, "We have to address the sidewalk situation since we realized it is not appropriate for pedestrians to be on it and us to work."

The road is expected to reopen during the summer.
