The incident happened at the Wells Fargo branch in the 1900 block of Highway 20 East in Conyers.

A spokesman for the Conyers Police Department told Channel 2's George Howell that a branch employee's grandchild was inside the bank at closing time, along with the employee's adult daughter. As they were waiting, the baby girl began to roam the building.

The 14-month-old wandered off and into the vault unbeknownst to her parent. The vault, which has a time lock closed, trapping the child inside.

After unsuccessfully searching for the baby, they concluded that the baby may have gone into the bank vault. Cameras inside the vault confirmed their fears.

An employee would have had to close the vault, not knowing that the baby was inside, said a locksmith at the scene.

First responders arrived at the scene and began pumping fresh air into vents connected to the vault. The baby could be heard crying, police confirmed.

The baby was freed about three hours later.

"The toddler was safe the whole time," said Wells Fargo spokesman Jay Lawrence.
