HALL COUNTY, Ga. — Two Gainesville men were charged after, deputies said, they were caught stealing copper from an electric substation.
It was 4:30 a.m. when 38-year-old Delaney Van Dyke and Shannon Whitt, 38, broke into a Jackson Electric Membership Corporation substation on Wednesday, according to a Hall County Sheriff's Office statement. The pair cut through a locked fence of the building on Cagle Road in the eastern area of the county, deputies said.
Deputies said they walked in on the two stealing copper wire worth more than $500, and the suspects ran away. The suspects disappeared into the woods, but deputies said they found them walking on Highway 365 shortly after.
Both men were charged with criminal trespass, second-degree criminal damage to property and theft.
