1 dead in officer-involved shooting in Decatur

DECATUR, Ga.,None — An armed robbery suspect is dead following an officer-involved shooting early Saturday morning.

DeKalb County police told Channel 2's Sophia Choi that the incident began when officers received a call about a carjacking on Columbia Drive.

Officers from the south precinct found the suspect and began to chase him. The man drove the stolen truck up a hill on Thomas Road, got out and started running into the nearby wooded area, police said.

Police said officers ran after the man, and that's when the shooting happened. Investigators said they are not sure if the man shot at police, but they did recover a gun.

"The officers gave chase and we had a shoot out here at the end of the road," Capt. Cornelius Yarbro said. "The officers at this point felt the need to return fire, so the assumption is he did fire at the officers."

A police source told Choi that the man was shot at least once in the leg. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

Autopsy results are expected within the next two days.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
