The 5 best Tom Cruise movies to binge-watch this weekend

The Impossible Mission Force has returned.

We're not talking about the fictional spy agency at the center of the "Mission: Impossible" movies, but rather Mr. Tom Cruise himself, the actor and producer whose death-defying stunts have turned the action franchise into a behemoth.

In honor of the sixth installment in the 22-year-old series, "Mission: Impossible – Fallout," we're revisiting Cruise's entire acting resume. Here are his five best films to binge-watch this weekend if you can't get enough Cruise.

If you feel the need, the need for speed: 'Top Gun'

"Top Gun" is one of the latest classic films to get the Hollywood revival/reboot treatment (look out for Miles Teller as Goose's [Anthony Edwards] son in the forthcoming sequel), which hopefully won't change our memory of the original. Cruise's all-American charm is on full display in the testosterone-filled comedy, more so than any other in his career.

Stream it on Starz.

If you like that old time rock ’n’ roll: 'Risky Business'

Just take those old records off the shelf. The 1983 film is the best movie ever made about an idiot high schooler who destroys his dad's prized car – well, except "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." "Business" started Cruise's charm offensive when he was just 21, and helped put him on the map as an actor. What else was Cruise up to in 1983? Just appearing in "The Outsiders," "Losin' It" and "All the Right Moves," too. The actor never does anything halfway.

If Cruise had you at 'hello': 'Jerry Maguire'

Cruise has tried his hand at a few romantic comedies, but none is better than "Maguire," the Cameron Crowe-penned explosion of schmaltz and sentiment. The endlessly quotable film is one of Cruise's best performances, and his chemistry with co-stars Cuba Gooding Jr. and Renee Zellweger make the sometimes-cheesy film work.

If you can handle the truth: 'A Few Good Men'

Cruise's recent credits include a string of action films that rely on his star power and stunt prowess, so it's easy to forget that the man can act. He puts up one of his best performances in the military drama as a lawyer defending two Marines charged with murder. Although Cruise has been nominated for an Oscar three times (for "Born on the Fourth of July," "Magnolia" and "Jerry Maguire"), it's a real shame "Good Men" didn't make the cut.

Buy it on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu or YouTube.

If you choose to accept your mission: 'Mission: Impossible'

Minus the second installment, the entire "M:I" franchise holds up pretty well, but none has quite matched the heights of director Brian De Palma's original. From the nods to the TV series that inspired the film, to the iconic scene with Cruise being lowered into a room in the CIA for the film's titular impossible mission, the 1996 film could beat up all its sequels in a fight.
