Famous Sportscaster, NFL quarterback to speak at Mount Paran on raising athletes

Tournaments, training, specializing in one sport -- raising student-athletes these days isn’t the same as it was 20 years ago.

What should today’s athletes be doing or not doing? Mount Paran Christian School is hosting former NFL quarterback and current sportscaster Danny Kanell for a Ted-style talk "Raising Athletes: The Good, Bad, and the Ugly” on Thursday, Feb. 27. The public is invited to attend.

Kanell’s vast experience and knowledge of the high school, college and professional sports worlds form the foundation of his tips for striking a balance in developing young athletes in today’s ultra-competitive culture. Kanell was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers out of high school, but he chose football over baseball. The quarterback went to Florida State, was named the 1995 ACC Player of the Year and led the Noles to Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl victories.

Kanell was drafted by the New York Giants, which he led to an NFC Eastern Division title. He later played for the Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos. He has worked for several media organizations since retiring from the league including ABC and ESPN.
