DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — A Douglas County firefighter who recently learned he is colorblind got a special surprise last week that brought him to tears.

Spencer Caradine, 21, told Channel 2's Carol Sbarge that he never knew he suffered from red-green colorblindness until a co-worker noticed.

"I never thought it was a problem," Caradine said. "I guess my colors were just different than everyone else's."

"(I said) 'It's just to the right of the red barn,'" Gardner said. "He was, like, 'I don't see it.'"

Caradine and co-worker Jordan Garder were hiking when Gardner noticed something wasn't right.

Realizing Caradine might be colorblind, Gardner secretly gave him a colorblind test. When he realized his friend couldn't see red and green, he ordered him special glasses.

When the other firefighters in the station learned about it, they chipped in and surprised Caradine with the glasses on July 3.

His first request? To see the American flag.

Sweet video captured the emotional moment Caradine put on the glasses for the first time and saw the U.S. flag hung across a firetruck.

Caradine said his view was forever changed.

"It was insane. It was crazy," Caradine said. "It blew my mind."

A nearly speechless Caradine stared at the flag for a few moments before hugging Gardner.

Caradine said the American flag looked different than he could have imagined.

"It was so much different from what I've ever seen," Caradine said. "It was more beautiful."

He also got to see a fireworks display in full color, and the vivid red of the firetruck he works on.

Since then, someone has donated a pair of glasses to Caradine that he can also wear inside. He will get on Tuesday.
