Alex Gonzalez likely out for the season

By Zach Klein

Braves shortstop Alex Gonzalez has most likely played his final game this season.

Before the team’s regular season finale against Philadelphia, manger Fredi Gonzalez told Channel 2 Action Sports director Zach Klein, “He’s going to be out for a couple of weeks I would think. But, you know what, you feel comfortable with (Jack) Wilson.”

Wilson has appeared in 16 games for the Braves since being traded to Atlanta from Seattle in early September.

“He’s done it for a lot of years and for me he is one of the top defenders in the league. He is not chop liver at the plate,” said Gonzalez. “He can handle the bat.”

The Braves called up shortstop prospect Tyler Pastornicky from the Instructional League to back up Wilson at shortstop.

Gonzalez was hitting .455 with three home runs and eight RBI’s before leaving Tuesday’s game after just one inning.

“It’s the same leg, but a different part of the calf,” said manager Fredi Gonzalez. “It doesn’t look good because when you are dealing with those calf strains it can be a lingering injury.”
